Event at Shawnee Trail Conservation Area open to hunters age 11-15.
MINDENMINES, Mo. – Young hunters can learn about and try dove hunting at an upcoming Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) youth dove-hunting workshop and hunt at MDC’s Shawnee Trail Conservation Area in Barton County. From 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Aug. 31, young hunters will be introduced to the sport of dove hunting and the outdoor ethics and firearms safety skills that go with it at a pre-hunt workshop at the Shawnee Trail Area shop. This will be followed by an adult-mentored hunt on Sept. 3 at Shawnee Trail Conservation Area.
This event is open to youths age 11-15. All youth hunters must be accompanied by an adult (one adult per youth) for all portions of the clinic and hunt. Youths must attend the Aug. 31workshop to participate in the Sept. 3 hunt. All youth hunters must be hunter education certified and have a migratory bird hunting permit.
Besides being an enjoyable outdoor pastime, dove hunting can be an educational tool, too. The wing-shooting techniques and firearms safety practices needed to be a successful dove hunter are good things for hunters to know and can serve as an introduction to other hunting and sportshooting activities.
