Trout Notice
=============== Summer 2013 Advisory
Due to the record number of flood events (six total) in spring, rainbow trout
growth-rates at Department?s Montauk Hatchery near Licking have slowed during
the late spring and early summer. Reduced growth rates are a response to the
warmer, more turbid water conditions associated with flooding. As a result,
anglers will notice a small and temporary reduction in the length of fish
stocked at Montauk State Park and at Maramec Trout Park near St. James. With
improving conditions, the size of fish stocked should return to normal
lengths during August. Thanks to recent hatchery improvements and the hard
work and dedication of staff at Montauk, the impacts to anglers will be
minimal and short term.

Fish Management Notice
=============== Trout Stocking
The Conservation Department stocks trout in each of the trout parks every
evening from the day before the March 1 opener through Oct. 30. Tag sale
estimates determine a daily stocking rate average of 2.25 fish per expected
angler. Except on opening day, three fish are stocked for every expected
angler. From March 1 to Oct. 31, the parks will collectively sell more than
400,000 tags and stock more than 900,000 fish. These fish will average about
12 inches long over the season, but some variation occurs. Dozens of lunkers
weighing upwards of 3 pounds are stocked each year. A few tip the scales at
more than 10 pounds.

Discover nature with MDC through fall color

MDC weekly reports and mobile app can help find fall color all around the Show-Me State.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – As the heat of summer fades into the cool weather of fall, trees and shrubs around the Show-Me State transform from leaves of green to a fall-foliage color palette of golds, reds, oranges, and purples.

Leaves turn colors when two things happen. First, sugars produced by photosynthesis are trapped inside leaves by chilly – but not freezing – autumn nights. Those sugars are the building blocks for red, yellow, orange, and purple pigments. Cool nights simultaneously cause the breakdown of green pigments, allowing these other colors to show through.

Missouri’s fall color starts in late September and usually peaks in mid-October. This progression of color change starts earliest in northern Missouri and moves southward across the state. Normally by late October, colors are fading and leaves are beginning to drop from trees. Generally, color change is predictable, but can vary year to year. Much depends on weather.

According to Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) Community Forestry Program Manager Nick Kuhn, this year’s fall color is expected to be good due to several factors.

“A wet spring and cooler summer gave trees what they needed and extended springtime,” said Kuhn. “Healthy trees with lots of leaves and recent warm and dry weather brought trees fully into the summer season in expectation of good fall color. The final part for great color will be the right conditions in fall, and those are sunny days and cool nights with no frost or high winds.”

MDC can help folks discover fall color around the Show-Me State through weekly fall-color reports and a free fall-color mobile app.

MDC collects fall-color reports from foresters around the state and assembles them into weekly online updates atmdc.mo.gov/node/4548. The reports run from late-September through November. Fall-color forecasts for northern regions will be posted beginning Sept. 19. Forecasts for remaining regions will be posted beginning Sept. 26.

MDC also offers a free fall color application for smart phones and other mobile devices. The MO Fall Color app provides users with up-to-the-minute fall-color scenes from places near them and around the state, complete with GPS navigation information. The app also provides weekly fall-color reports for various areas of the state. Users can even add their own fall-color photos and share them with Facebook friends and others. The MO Fall Color app is active during fall-color changes beginning in September through November. Download MO Fall Color for Android and Apple devices atmdc.mo.gov/mobile/mobile-apps/mo-fall-colors.

Informational meeting scheduled at Finger Lakes State Park Sept. 20

The public is invited to bring their ideas to an informational meeting on Friday, Sept. 20 at 6 p.m. at Finger
Lakes State Park near Columbia. The meeting will be held in the park office. Park staff will be available to provide the most recent information about the park and answer questions. This informational meeting is part of an ongoing effort by Missouri State Parks to ensure that citizens have input on facilities and services offered in state parks and historic sites.
A visit to Finger Lakes State Park is also a great opportunity to log miles as a part of the Governor’s 100 Missouri Miles challenge. To celebrate Missouri’s distinction as the “Best Trails State” by American Trails and to encourage Missourians to enjoy the outdoors, Governor Jay Nixon and First Lady Georganne Nixon are inviting Missourians to join them in completing 100 Missouri Miles of outdoor physical activity by the end of the year. For more information and to take the Challenge, visit 100MissouriMiles.com. Participants can also share adventures, post photos and learn about upcoming events by connecting with 100 Missouri Miles on Facebook and Twitter.

MDC seeks comments on forest-management guidelines

Guidelines to help landowners achieve forest management goals while also benefiting wildlife.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – If you own or manage forest land, you might want to take a look at the newly created, voluntaryforest-management guidelines being developed in cooperation with the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC).

MDC is asking for comments about the guidelines from anyone with an interest in Missouri’s public and private forests. These guidelines are strictly voluntary but are designed to assist private land owners in managing their forest resources.

“We want these guidelines to be understandable and practical for anyone to use,” says MDC Resource Forester Mike Bill. “To achieve that, we want everyone with an interest in management of Missouri’s forest to be able to read the guidelines and tell us what they think about them.”

A draft version of the Missouri Forest Management Guidelines is online for public comment at mdc.mo.gov/node/23881from Sept. 15 through Nov. 15.

Bill helped coordinate development of the guidelines, a process that took approximately 18 months. Contributors included public and private foresters, fish and wildlife biologists, botanists, landowners and representatives of Missouri’s forest products industry. This group was made-up of 30 representatives from 16 organizations.

The guidelines provide advice on how to carefully manage forest resources to protect and enhance soil and water quality, visual quality, wildlife habitat, rare plants and animals, historical and cultural resources, and forest health.  The document also outlines why a well-managed forest is important to all these resource elements.

“It’s our job to do everything we can to ensure that future generations of Missourians have the same or better forests than we have today,” says Bill. “You can’t do that without science-based management, and you can’t do it without active citizen support and landowner participation.  More than 80 percent of Missouri’s forest acreage is privately owned. It is absolutely critical that we engage landowners and the people who work and play on private forest land.”

More information about Missouri forests and forest management is available at mdc.mo.gov/your-property.

Trout Notice
=============== Summer 2013 Advisory

=============== Trout Stocking
