Cicadas begin their summer sounds in July

Discover nature and learn more about the periodical and annual cicada.
JEFFERSON CTY, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) encourages people to discover nature this summer by learning more about cicadas. There are two types of cicadas, annual and periodical. As their names suggest, annual cicadas make an appearance every summer in July, whereas periodical cicadas emerge in 13 and 17-year cycles in late May.
Annual cicadas have dark eyes and greenish bodies, unlike the slightly smaller periodicals which have red eyes and blackish bodies.
After spending two-to-five years underground feeding on root juices, the annual cicada nymphs emerge and begin the search for mates using their raspy hum.
The cicada’s endless drone seems to come from everywhere. Cicadas emit a sound that can reach up to 95 decibels, depending on proximity. That is the equivalent noise level of a Boeing 737 before landing.
Unlike crickets rubbing together parts of their wings to create a chirp, male cicadas rapidly vibrate a piece of their exoskeleton to produce their loud call.
Despite the mild sound annoyance cicadas induce, the insect is a valuable food source for wildlife such as birds and other insects. In other countries it’s common for people to chow down on the meaty bug due to its predictable emergence in the summer. Cicadas pose no threat to people and minimal threats to trees.
While Missouri doesn’t have to worry about a large periodical cicada invasion this summer, states toward the east such as Ohio and West Virginia are dealing with a 17-year brood. The next 13-year periodical will not make an appearance in Missouri until 2024.

Thirteen-year periodical Cicadas expected to ring in noisy southeast Missouri summer

Periodic cicadas have distinctive red eyes, black bodies, and are slightly smaller than the annual cicadas that appear each year in late summer.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – This summer may be a noisy one throughout parts of Southeast Missouri according to the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC). A brood of 13-year cicadas (Brood XXIII) that extends from Illinois to Louisiana will emerge in southeastern Missouri in mid-May.
Periodical cicadas pose no threat to people and minimal threats to trees. But early summer will be abuzz with sound where cicadas emerge, said Rob Lawrence, forest entomologist for the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC).
"In some places they make a pretty loud noise," Lawrence said.
Cicada nymphs will open half-inch holes in the soil surface as they emerge. Some may build three- to five-inch tall mud chimneys above their holes. Wingless nymphs will climb up on trees and other objects, shed their exoskeletons and become adults with wings. That leaves brownish paper shells that resemble shed skins attached to trees, porches and posts.
Adults will climb or fly into trees. Males will join together to form choruses to attract females. Or consider it a jam session with instruments. Male cicadas rapidly flex two drum-like structures in their abdomens called tymbals. The flexing produces a click, and the clicks come so fast it produces a raspy hum. They sing during the day with the loudest drone rising during the hottest part of the day.
Annual cicadas appear each year and their drone ebbs and flows in the tree tops. But annual cicadas appear later in the summer than the periodical variety, Lawrence said. Periodical cicadas will be prevalent in late May and June; annual cicadas appear in July and August.
Periodical cicadas are so named because the broods emerge in 13-year or 17-year cycles. This 13-year emergence is occurring in southeast Missouri and portions of other states. Another 17-year brood emergence is occurring in an area that extends from Iowa to Texas and includes western Missouri and eastern Kansas. However, the two broods are not expected to overlap.

Periodical cicadas will not appear in all locations within the brood emergence area, Lawrence said. A field or yard that did not have trees 13 years ago would not have provided a place for females to lay eggs and for the nymphs to hatch and drop to the soil. Also, soil condition changes such as severe drought or construction disturbance could reduce the number of nymphs.
However, in some areas with favorable conditions, periodical cicadas could appear by the hundreds or even thousands. Such large, periodic emergences provide a feast for creatures that feed on insects. Wild turkeys will eat nymphs, so will fish where cicadas drop into the water. The large emergences are an evolutionary adaptation that lets the species survive by overwhelming predators with sheer numbers and a lengthy emergence cycle, Lawrence said.
Cicadas can affect trees. Females cut narrow slits in small branches and lay eggs in the slits. This can cause stress for limbs. Large, mature trees are generally not greatly affected. Although homeowners may notice some browned and broken branch tips, which is called flagging. Young trees can be harmed, and fruit trees can be stressed, because they have small branches favored by females for egg laying.
MDC foresters do not recommend using insecticides for cicadas. Small or newly-planted trees and shrubs can be covered with mesh and tied at the trunk. To reduce stress issues, homeowners should water young trees well during summer's hot and dry months, Lawrence said.
"Once they get out, they'll be singing in the trees for a while and make the racket," Lawrence said.

MDC foresters say 17-year cicadas will raise a racket

Periodic cicada emergence will include western Missouri
Kansas City, Mo. – For 17 years a particular brood of cicada nymphs tunneled through the soil, sucked sap from roots and grew from ant-like specks into bumblebee-sized nymphs. They will emerge by the thousands this spring in western Missouri and transform into winged adult insects, with male cicadas raising a raspy racket as they serenade females.
    Periodical cicadas pose no threat to people and minimal threats to trees. But early summer will be abuzz with sound where 17-year cicadas emerge, said Rob Lawrence, forest entomologist for the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC).
   “In some places they make a pretty loud noise,” Lawrence said.
   The cicadas will begin emerging from the soil in early to mid-May, depending on how quickly weather conditions warm soil temperature. Current conditions could prompt the emergence to begin May 10 to May 12 in the Kansas City and St. Joseph areas, he said, though warm temperatures could hasten emergence.

      Back in 1998, when the parents of this 17-year cicada brood were mating, an adjancent 13-year brood also emerged. But that overlap only occurs once every 221 years, Lawrence said.
   This emergence will not be as large but will still be noisy. Adults emerging from the nymph shells will be soft at first. But within hours their wings and exoskeleton will dry and harden. They will then begin making the next generation that will sing in 2032.
   “Once they get out, they’ll be singing in the trees for a while and make the racket,” Lawrence said.

Brown patches in trees may be a result of cicadas and scale insects

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – This year’s summer green is being interrupted by brown patches in Missouri’s trees, and it’s not just because of the heat.
Brown leaves can appear on trees in many patterns for many reasons. Common this summer are small clusters of wilted, brown leaves scattered throughout tree crowns and around yards. These dead tree-branch tips are cases of “branch flagging,” which can be caused by insects, disease or weather-related injury.

This year, the prevalent branch flagging in many parts of the state is largely a result of two insects: the 13-year periodical cicadas that emerged in May and much less obvious insects called Kermes scales, which appear more like galls or buds than insects.

“In years when periodical cicadas emerge, branch flagging can be widespread and dramatic,” said Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) Forest Entomologist Rob Lawrence. “Branch flagging in these years results from the cicadas’ breeding and egg-laying behavior.”

Once periodical cicadas emerge from the ground, shed their exoskeletons and dry their wings, they mate and lay eggs in the twigs of trees. Female cicadas use a saw-like appendage on the abdomen to slice into the underside of twigs and deposit their eggs. The weakened twigs are often broken by wind, causing bunches of leaves to dangle from branches or fall to the ground.

Cicada-damaged twigs can be identified by a line of small slits on the underside. MDC recommends only very light pruning in the summer if necessary, with heavier corrective pruning as needed when trees are dormant in the winter.

Branch flagging can occur due to causes other than cicadas. A main source of tree damage in southwestern Missouri has been Kermes scales, sap-feeding insects that damage oak trees. These tan to reddish-brown insects, less than 1/4 inch wide, feed by inserting tube-like mouthparts into plant tissue and sucking out fluids. Kermes scales can be treated in late fall with systemic insecticides labeled for use on soft scales on oaks, or they can be left for their natural enemies to control.

Other possible causes of branch flagging include insects such as twig girdlers and twig pruners, or Botryosphaeria cankers caused by a fungus.

Another more serious concern is thousand cankers disease of black walnut, which has not yet been detected in Missouri but can cause wilted, brown leaves to remain on branches and eventually kill walnut trees.

“For all causes of branch flagging, reducing further stress on the tree provides the best chance for it to recover,” Lawrence said. “This might include supplemental watering during drought, avoiding injury to trunk and roots with mowing equipment and avoiding excess pruning and other damage.”

Major periodical cicada emergence imminent

Periodical cicadas emerge earlier and are different from the more familiar dog-day cicadas, which come out later in the summer. The periodical varieties have dark bodies and reddish eyes and wings. Dog-day cicadas range from brown to green with black-and-white markings. Periodical cicadas also are noticeably smaller than dog-day cicadas
.
Periodical cicadas come in several varieties. Some spend 13 years in the ground feeding on sap from tree roots before emerging en masse. Seventeen-year cicada nymphs take four years longer to mature.

To further confuse matters, periodical cicadas exist in broods that inhabit geographic areas ranging from a few thousand square miles to vast chunks of real estate spanning several states.
When a brood emerges, as many as a million noisy male cicadas can gather in trees over a single acre and join in a piercing chorus of mating calls. Their combined voices create an unforgettable din, drowning out lawnmowers and making normal conversation impossible.

Missouri witnessed the emergence of a particularly large brood of 13-year cicadas in1998, so 2011 promises to be a noisy spring in much of the state. This year’s emergence is expected to cover most of Missouri. The Bootheel and part of northwest Missouri will escape the phenomenon. If this disappoints you, cheer up. The existence of multiple broods means you don’t actually have to wait 13 or 17 years for the next emergence. Other single-brood emergences are expected in northern Missouri in 2014 and in west-central and southeastern Missouri in 2015.

The cicada chorus is likely to begin tuning up in early May, reach a deafening crescendo in a couple of weeks, and taper off in June. Although periodical cicadas are not much bigger than the end of your pinkie finger, their numbers allow them to drown out a chainsaw.

Male cicadas use a pair of structures called tymbals to produce their song. Tymbals are elastic membranes located just behind cicadas’ last pair of legs. Tiny muscles contract and relax rapidly, crumpling the tymbals and letting them snap back into their original shape. They make a loud click with each muscle twitch, creating a high-pitched droning sound. The process is similar to crumpling a soft-drink bottle.

2011 marks the return of the 13-year periodic cicada.
Female cicadas use a sharp appendage to slice into tree twigs, where they lay their eggs. Twigs often die, and sometimes they break and droop. This “flagging” can be quite visible in areas with large numbers of cicadas. The damage to mature trees is minor, so pesticide use is not recommended. Cheesecloth, mosquito netting or netting with mesh smaller than 1/4-inch is effective for protecting small trees.

A periodical cicada emergence creates a brief food bonanza for birds and fish. It also creates opportunities for anglers. As fish go on feeding binges, anything resembling a cicada can prompt a bite.

When the brood that is emerging in Missouri this year last appeared, it was joined by a large brood of 17-year cicadas. It was the two broods’ first joint emergence since 1777. Their respective life cycles dictate that such joint emergences occur every 221 years, so the next one will take place in 2219.
