BRANSON, Mo. – Young anglers will have opportunities to catch fish at the Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) Kids’ Fishing Day on June 10 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Bella Donna Education Pond at MDC’s Shepherd of the Hills Fish Hatchery near Branson. The event is open to anglers ages 15 and under.

Sunfish and channel catfish will be the fish anglers will be trying to catch at the pond, which is east of the main hatchery complex. (Signs will direct people to the event.) A few loaner fishing poles will be available, but participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing equipment.  MDC staff will be providing worms for bait, but participants can bring their own, too. This event is being held in conjunction with Free Fishing Weekend, the annual event in June through which fishing permits are not required at any state-managed fishing location. It should be noted that all other fishing regulations (length limits, possession limits, etc.) still apply for Free Fishing Weekend.

MDC invites youth, families to free fishing classes in Columbia

Four Discover Nature – Fishing courses offered on Tuesday evenings in August, September.

COLUMBIA, Mo. — The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) invites kids and their families to a free, four-class series of fishing workshops in August and September.  The Discover Nature – Fishing workshops will cover the basics of fishing from tackle to knot-tying, and participants will gain the skills and confidence to go fishing on their own. 

The free Discover Nature – Fishing classes will take place from 6 – 8 p.m. on Tuesday evenings in August and September at Bass Pro Lake, 3101 Bass Pro Drive in Columbia.  MDC will provide all needed equipment and supplies.  Each of the four lessons will focus on a different topic:

• Lesson 1 – Equipment, casting, and proper fish handling (Aug. 23)
• Lesson 2 – How to tie a knot and bait a hook (Aug. 30)
• Lesson 3 – Five common Missouri fish: anatomy, habitat, and lifecycle (Sept. 13)
• Lesson 4 – Fishing with lures and fishing regulations (Sept. 20)

“Conservation makes Missouri a great place to fish and these classes will offer kids and families unique opportunities to get a hands-on education about fishing in Misosuri.  They will also help enable young anglers to enjoy a lifetime of fishing fun as they grow older,” said MDC Angler Education Assistant Don Rahm. 

Discover Nature – Fishing focuses primarily on reaching kids 7 – 15 years of age and emphasizes family involvement.  All kids must be accompanied by an adult and all participants must preregister by visiting http://tinyurl.com/o7s5gst, or emailing Don.Rahm@mdc.mo.gov.   

MDC Family Fishing Fair set for Shepherd of the Hills

This free event, which is aimed at anglers ages 15 and under, will be from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Bluegill and channel catfish will be the fish anglers will be trying to catch, but the event is about more than hooking fish. Educational stations at the event will help young anglers learn to tie knots, filet and cook fish, rig up and cast a fishing pole, cast a fly rod and other fish-related activities. Free goodie bags will be given to all youth participants and there will be a drawing for a rod and reel at the end of the day.

Also at the event will be MDC’s “My First Fish” station. Young anglers who make their first catch can bring their fish to this station to have a photo and information taken for a certificate that will be mailed to the family.

The “Fishin’ Magicians” will also perform. This local magic act will entertain with fun magic and, at the same time, pass on educational messages about the importance of caring for our water resources.

A limited number of loaner fishing poles will be available, but it’s suggested that all anglers bring their own fishing equipment, bait and cooler, if they plan to keep fish.

Kellogg Lake Kids' Fishing Day planned for June 11

Openings still available for volunteers who wish to help with annual youth fishing event.

CARTHAGE, Mo. – Young anglers will have opportunities to catch fish and learn about fishing at the 15th annual Kids’ Fishing Day on June 11 at Kellogg Lake. The event, which is for ages 15 and under, will be from 8 a.m. until noon. Sponsors for this event are the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC), the City of Carthage, the Kellogg Lake Group, the Carthage Rotary Club and several local businesses. Kellogg Lake is a 25-acre reservoir on the east side of the city of Carthage.

A variety of activities are planned, including educational stations, fishing stations and prize give-aways. Youth anglers who attend four education stations will be eligible for the prize drawings. Free refreshments will also be served.

There is no pre-registration for the event, but anglers will be asked to register the day of the event. All participating youth anglers need to bring their own fishing equipment. Worms will be provided. The Kellogg Lake Kids’ Fishing Day is another example of how MDC helps people discover nature.

Help kids get hooked on the thrill of fishing, and discover nature. 

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Fishing helps kids discover nature and conserve it, too. Help the kids in your life get hooked on the thrill of fishing. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) invites kids (up to age 15) to a day of free fishing, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 25, at MDC headquarters in Jefferson City.

MDC staff and volunteers will teach participants about fish, fish habitat, fishing techniques and will include plenty of catch and release fishing at the MDC fishing ponds. Fishing gear and bait will be available, or bring your own fishing equipment. A free hot dog lunch will be provided for all participants. All you have to do is bring your kids and plenty of energy!

According to MDC Fisheries Program Specialist Andrew Branson, fishing is a great pastime that all ages can participate in.

“Fishing is a great way for kids and families to have fun, discover nature, and make happy memories together,” said Branson. “Don't let inexperience keep you and your kids from enjoying Missouri's great outdoors. The MDC kids fishing days are designed to help introduce fishing to kids and youth groups.”

Kids' Fishing Day scheduled for Roaring River State Park

Young angling enthusiasts will get to experience the fun of fishing at Kids' Fishing Fun Day Aug. 15 at Roaring River State Park near Cassville. On that day, anglers age 15 and under will fish for free for rainbow trout at a portion of the park specially stocked for the event.

CASSVILLE, Mo. – Fishing helps kids discover nature. Helping children get hooked on the thrill of fishing will be the focus of Kids’ Fishing Day on Aug. 15 at Roaring River State Park. This free event will be held 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC), Missouri Department of Natural Resources and a number of businesses and local organizations.

At Kids’ Fishing Day, children age 15 and under will be able to pick up free trout tags at the hatchery office any time the day prior to the event (Aug. 14) or all day on the day of the event. A portion of the park’s fishing area will be reserved for the event. Volunteers will be available to assist the young anglers. Children are encouraged to bring their own fishing equipment. Parents are welcome to assist kids, but only one pole may be used between helper and child. Adults are not allowed to fish by themselves. Free hotdogs, chips and soda will be available 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Outdoor education is also part of Kids’ Fishing Day. Throughout the day, seminars will be held on fish cleaning, fish cooking, Dutch oven cooking, taxidermy, watersheds, knot tying, fly tying and fly casting, how to fish Roaring River, stream biology and other subjects. A tour of the MDC hatchery at the park will show how trout are raised. A program on Missouri snakes will be given using live specimens. If kids attend three classes, they will be entered into a drawing for prizes. The drawing will be held at 5 p.m. Children must be present to win. Classes are also open to the whole family, but only children may enter the drawings.

MDC hosts Discover Nature Field Day for KC youths

Partnership with Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City connects kids with nature

Kansas City, Mo. – They touched snakes, petted turtles, caught fish and sent an arrow into a bullseye. Youths attending the kickoff on Tuesday, June 23, for the Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) annual Discover Nature Field Day connected with nature and learned outdoor skills. This annual event at the James A. Reed Memorial Wildlife Area is a cooperative partnership between MDC and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City.

  

 More than 1,000 youths from urban Kansas City will participate in the four-day Field Day, said Wendy Parrett, an MDC education consultant who coordinated the event. Attendees range from kindergarten students to seniors in high school. Volunteers from the Missouri Master Naturalists assisted MDC staff in teaching skills and making presentations.

   Youths tried out a buffalo hide lean to, learned about wild edibles such as walnuts. Live snakes and turtles always draw interest. But youths also netted bugs in the water and bugs in the prairie. Fishing was popular, the bluegill were biting. Older youths paddled canoes. They learned pellet gun and archery shooting skills with instruction from staff.

Kid’s Fishing Day at Wallace State Park on June 20

Kid’s Fishing Day at Wallace State Park will be held on Saturday, June 20. Sponsored by Missouri State Parks and the Missouri Department of Conservation, the event will start at 9 a.m. and children aged 5 to 12 can fish for free. The event will be held at Lake Allaman in the park, and will run until12 p.m.

Fishing poles will be provided to the first 40 kids to register that morning. Kids that bring their own poles do not need to register. Bait and assistance will be provided. Parents are encouraged to attend. A nature display and drawings for prizes will take place at the Open Shelterhouse.

Wallace State Park is located six miles south of Cameron on Highway 121. From Interstate 35, take Exit 48, go south on Highway 69 for one-half mile, and then take Highway 121 for one mile to park entrance. COLUMBIA, Mo.—The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC), in partnership with Bass Pro Shop, Mexico Bassmasters and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, invite families to discover nature at the 10th annual “Reel” Time with Kids free fishing event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 6 at Bass Pro Shop Sportsman’s Center, 3101 Bass Pro Dr. in Columbia.

Bait will be provided, as well as fishing poles for those who do not have their own. The event will also have educational displays, food, and drawings for prizes.

“This is a great opportunity to introduce kids of all ages to fishing,” said MDC Angler Education Assistant Don Rahm. “Fishing is a great sport and a wonderful way to enjoy the outdoors.”

“Reel” time fishing for kids is taking place during Great Outdoors Month, a state and national recognition of the benefits of active fun outdoors, as well as the annual free fishing days in Missouri. Each year, MDC designates the weekend after the first Monday in June as Free Fishing Days in Missouri to encourage people to sample the state's abundant fishing opportunities.

During Free Fishing Days, June 6-7, anyone can fish in the Show-me State without having to buy a fishing permit, trout stamp, or trout park daily tag. Normal regulations, such as limits on size and number of fish an angler can keep, remain in effect during Free Fishing Days. Some private fishing areas still require permits on free fishing days, and trespass laws remain in effect on private property. Public fishing areas are available in every county in Missouri. Many state-owned fishing areas also have special facilities for anglers with disabilities.

Bennett Spring to hold Kids' Fishing Day May 2

LEBANON, Mo. – Young anglers will have opportunities to catch fish and learn about fishing at Bennett Spring State Park’s Kids’ Fishing Day. This event will be held 6:30 a.m. to 8:15 p.m. on May 2 at Bennett Spring State Park. The event is being sponsored by the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC), the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and other sponsors.

At Kids’ Fishing Day, children age 15 and under can pick up free trout tags at the hatchery shop on May 1 from 5 p.m.-8 p.m. or at the registration tent across from the park store on the day of the event. A section of Zone 2 and Zone 3 at the park will be reserved for youth anglers. Volunteers will be on hand to help. Children are encouraged to bring their own fishing equipment. Parents are welcome to help kids, but adults are also asked to let children fish by themselves as much as possible. Only one pole may be used between the helper and the child. Adults are not allowed to fish in the designated kids’ fishing zone. Lunch will be available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Educational events will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Volunteers are needed to help with this event. Individuals wishing to volunteer do not need to be experienced anglers. LICKING, Mo. – Young anglers will have opportunities to catch fish and learn about fishing at Montauk State Park’s Kids’ Fishing Day. This event will be held 6:30 a.m. to 8:15 p.m. onMay 2 at Montauk State Park. The event is sponsored by the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) in cooperation with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

At Kids’ Fishing Day, children age 15 and under can pick up their free trout tag at the registration booth from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on May 1 or on the day of the event. The spring branch from the CCC Spillway to the Social Hole will be reserved for the youth anglers and stocked with trout all day. Volunteers will be on hand to help out. Children are encouraged to bring their own fishing equipment. Parents are welcome to help the kids, but only one pole may be used between the helper and the child. Adults are not allowed to fish by themselves in the area designated for youth fishing.

Education is also part of Kids’ Fishing Day. Throughout the day, seminars will be held on topics related to trout fishing, fly tying, fly casting, and other topics. A Stream Table exhibit will also be on display.

There will be drawings for door prizes throughout the day. Individuals must be present to win. Free hotdogs and soda will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

MDC Lost Valley Hatchery to host Kids Fishing Day April 25

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will host the 14th annual Kids Fishing DaySaturday, April 25, at the Lost Valley Fish Hatchery, 28232 Hatchery Way in Warsaw, Mo. This free event welcomes youngsters age 15 and under to try fishing for the first time or for experienced anglers to learn new skills

    Registration for participants starts at 9 a.m. The whistle will blow at 10 a.m. for fishing to begin in the kid’s pond in front of the hatchery, and the event will conclude at 2 p.m. Channel catfish and hybrid sunfish will be stocked in the pond. Participants will be allowed to take two fish home to eat. MDC staff and volunteers will show new anglers how to bait hooks, cast with rod and reel, and land a fish.  

   “We can provide fishing poles and tackle on a first-come, first-serve basis, or they can bring their own poles and equipment,” said Lesly Conaway, MDC aquaculture biologist.

   Besides fishing, the event will offer target archery shooting, crafts and outdoor exhibits. Drawings will be held for giveaway items such as fishing rods and tackle boxes. Hotdogs and chips will be served as a free lunch while supplies last.

   MDC’s Lost Valley Hatchery produces sport fish such as walleye for stocking in Missouri’s lakes. But the hatchery also provides a year-round angling opportunity for youngsters. The kid’s pond is open to youth fishing year round. Channel catfish and hybrid sunfish are caught in warmer months. Rainbow trout are stocked in winter. The hatchery also offers a visitor showroom. Visitors can buy books in the Nature Shop, watch native fish in a large aquarium, and view exhibits about Missouri’s outdoor heritage.
