JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — The public is invited to bring their ideas to an open house and informational meeting on Thursday, May 2 at Fort Davidson State Historic Site in Pilot Knob.

Sponsored by Missouri State Parks, the open house will begin at 5 p.m. in the site’s visitor center, followed

by an informational meeting at 7 p.m. The meeting will address issues related to both the historic site and Elephant Rocks State Park near Graniteville.  

Representatives from the historic site and park will be on hand to provide information about the facilities and answer questions. Agenda items will include an update regarding the facilities, planned improvements at the sites and a recap of the year’s accomplishments. The public is invited to share comments about the facilities and current operations.

The informational meeting is part of an ongoing effort by Missouri State Parks to ensure citizens have input on facilities and services offered in state parks and historic sites. Earth Day volunteer workday at Nathan Boone Homestead State Historic Site on April 20

The public is invited to participate in an Earth Day volunteer workday at Nathan Boone Homestead State Historic Site. Sponsored by Missouri State Parks, the event will take place on Saturday, April 20 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.

During the volunteer workday, site staff will lead volunteers in projects to improve the appearance of the historic site. Volunteer projects will include whitewashing the Nathan Boone home and fence, as well as weeding and mulching young trees at the site.

Nathan Boone Homestead State Historic Site preserves the last home and grave of Missouri frontiersman Nathan Boone. The historic site is located 1.5 miles north of Ash Grove on State Highway V. The public is invited to bring their ideas to an informational meeting Tuesday, Sept. 11 at Bothwell Lodge State Historic Site near Sedalia. Sponsored by Missouri State Parks, the meeting will begin at 7 p.m. outdoors on the lodge breezeway.

Representatives from Missouri State Parks will provide information on future plans for the facility and answer questions. Visitors are invited to share comments and suggestions about the site’s services and operations.

The informational meeting is part of an ongoing effort by Missouri State Parks to ensure the public has input on services and facilities in state parks and historic sites.

Bothwell Lodge State Historic Site is located seven miles north of Sedalia, off Highway 65 on Bothwell State Park Road in Pettis County. Missouri State Parks offers two new volunteer programs

Groups and youth now have new ways to volunteer in Missouri state parks. The Adopt-a-Park and Youth Volunteer Patch programs have recently been added to the ways people can volunteer to improve Missouri state parks and historic sites.

The Missouri State Parks Adopt-a-Park Program gives families, organizations, youth groups, school groups and businesses the opportunity to support a Missouri state park or historic site. Areas within a park or historic site, such as trails, campgrounds, picnic areas and streams, can be adopted. Groups are asked to contribute 200 hours of service hours a year for two years. After completion of 100 hours, a sign will be put up at the park or historic site recognizing the group’s efforts. A list of adoptable areas at each facility is available online at mostateparks.com/page/59523/adopt-park-program. Check out the adoptable areas, and then contact the individual park or historic site to get started!

The Youth Volunteer Patch Program gives individuals under the age of 18 and organized youth groups, such as Scouts, 4-H groups and Future Farmers of America, the opportunity to assist with a variety of projects in a state park or historic site to earn patches. Lists of potential projects at each facility are available online at mostateparks.com/page/59696/youth-volunteer-patch-program. Groups or individuals should contact the park or historic site to arrange a day of service. Upon completion, each individual will receive a Missouri State Parks Youth Volunteer patch.

The public is invited to bring their ideas to an informational meeting Saturday, July 21 at Crowder State Park near Trenton. Sponsored by Missouri State Parks, the meeting will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. in the campground amphitheater.

Recent accomplishments at the park and future plans will be highlighted during the informational meeting. During the meeting, the future operation of the beach area will be discussed. Visitors are invited to share comments on Crowder State Park’s services and operations.

Missouri State Parks swimming beaches offer relief from the heat

One of the easiest ways to do something about the heat is to take a cooling, relaxing plunge in the water at one of the 17 Missouri State Parks swimming beaches throughout the state.
As has been the case throughout the summer, weekly water sampling showed that all state parks beaches met water quality standards as set by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, and will be open and welcoming visitors.
The beaches at two parks, Lewis and Clark State Park in Buchanan County and Trail of Tears State Park, Cape Girardeau County, remain closed for maintenance unrelated to water quality. Visit mostateparks.com for additional information.
The department samples the water at all designated beaches in the state park system weekly during the recreational season to determine suitability for swimming. The sample test results indicate a snap shot of the water quality taken at the beaches at a specific time; however, a single sample does not provide an overall sense of the water quality in the lake where the beach is located.

Missouri State Parks is hosting an open house Saturday, June 30 at Ha Ha Tonka State Park near Camdenton. Park staff will highlight projects of the State Parks Youth Corps and recent accomplishments at Ha Ha Tonka State Park. Visitors are invited to share comments and ask questions about the park and its facilities, as well as fill out comment cards and discuss concerns and suggestions.

The open house, held in conjunction with a special kaleidoscope program, will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. at the park visitor center.

The kaleidoscope program will include demonstrations on native grass weaving, Dutch oven cooking and orienteering as well as displays of mammal skins and skulls.

The open house is part of an ongoing effort by Missouri State Parks to ensure the public has input on services provided in state parks and historic sites.

Ha Ha Tonka State Park is located five miles southwest of Camdenton off U.S. Highway 54 on Highway D. Step back in time and enjoy a Summer Day Camp on June 23 at Harry S Truman Birthplace State Historic Site in Lamar. Sponsored by Missouri State Parks, the day camp will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Activities will include children’s games, a Victorian artifact hunt and sessions on Osage/bison history, weight of the Civil War soldier, and Truman through the years. Participants are asked to dress for the weather and bring a snack lunch. Pre-registration is required by June 11.

Frontier Children’s Festival planned May 19 at Nathan Boone Homestead State Historic Site

Discover the fun of yesterday at the Frontier Children’s Festival Saturday, May 19 at Nathan Boone Homestead State Historic Site near Ash Grove. Sponsored by Missouri State Parks, the free event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is open to the public.

The event will feature a number of games for kids, including activities related to Nathan Boone, his farm and the natural world at the historic site. A special feature will be a 19^th century pickup baseball game called base, which served as the ancestor of today’s baseball. At 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., visitors are encouraged to participate in a game of base and imagine what it was like in the 1800s.

Open house planned Dec. 29 at Knob Noster State Park

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., Dec. 22, 2011 – The public is invited to attend an open house at Knob Noster State Park near Knob Noster on Thursday, Dec. 29. The open house will be held from 3:30 to 6:00 p.m. at the park’s Visitor Center.

Representatives from the park will be on hand to discuss the reopening of the McAdoo Equestrian Trail. Details of the meeting will include information about the recent award of an $86,985 Recreational Trails Project Grant to the park for trail renovations. Also, information will be available about the State Park Youth Corps involvement with the park during 2010 and the Corps’ activity in 2011. Representatives from the facility will also provide information on future plans for the facility and answer questions. Visitors are invited to share comments and suggestions about the facility. The meeting is part of an ongoing effort to ensure the public has input and knowledge on services provided in Missouri state parks and historic sites.

The meeting will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Mastodon State Historic Site's museum auditorium. The meeting will also address Sandy Creek Covered Bridge State Historic Site in Goldman and Gov. Daniel Dunklin's Grave State Historic Site inHerculaneum.

            Staff from the historic sites will present information about the sites' operations, resource management and recreational developments. The agenda will include a summary of the activities during 2011 and future plans for the three sites. Items that will be discussed include the accomplishments of the State Parks Youth Corps, the grant for the preservation of Sandy Creek Covered Bridge, and the establishment of the Friends of Mastodon State Historic Site.
