Missouri State Parks hosts Open House and Bug Day Aug. 11 at Dr. Edmund A. Babler Memorial State Park

The
public is invited to bring their ideas to an open house Aug. 11 at Dr.
Edmund A. Babler Memorial State Park in Wildwood. In conjunction
with the open house, the park will also host Bug Day, which features
fun family activities focused on the world of insects. Sponsored by
Missouri State Parks, the open house and Bug Day are free and will be
held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the park’s visitor center.
Representatives
from the park will be on hand to review recent activities and projects
at the facility, including storm damage cleanup, renovation of the Scout
camp area, re-route of a section of Virginia Day Memorial Trail,
creation of walkway to Walnut Grove Shelter, and the upcoming Alta
Shelter restoration. Visitors will be invited to share comments
regarding park operations, services, and future plans for development.
Bug
Day activities will follow a mysterious insects theme with a mystery
theater show featuring Sherlock Holmes-inspired Inspector Insector at 10
a.m. and 1 p.m. Other bug day activities will include exhibits, games,
crafts, and an insect zoo. These activities will be fun for all ages.
This
open house is part of an ongoing effort by Missouri State Parks to
ensure citizens have input on facilities and services offered in state
parks and historic sites.
Dr.
Edmund A. Babler Memorial State Park is located 20 miles west of St.
Louis on Highway BA, between U.S. 40 and Highway 100. People requiring

Missouri State Parks hosts falconry program Aug. 18 at Thousand Hills State Park

Falconry,
the hunting of wild game with birds of prey, will be the focus of a
program Aug. 18 at Thousand Hills State Park near Kirksville. Sponsored
by Missouri State Parks, the free program will be held at 7 p.m. in the
Point Shelter and the public is invited to attend. Guest speaker and
falconer Meagan Duffee will present the program.

From
the ancient Egyptians to the nomadic Mongolians, falconry was
considered to be the sport of kings. Although it dates back thousands of
years, it is still alive and well today and considered by many to be
not just a sport, but an art form. Join us to learn what it is that
falconers do and what it takes to become a falconer, plus get an up
close look at some live raptors.
Please
bring a lawn chair or a towel to sit on in the grass in case the
benches fill up at the shelter. The program will last approximately one

The
public is invited to bring their ideas to an open house on Saturday,
Aug. 18 at Nathan Boone Homestead State Historic Site near Ash Grove.
Sponsored by Missouri State Parks, the open house will begin at 11 a.m.
at the historic site. In conjunction with the open house, admission to
the Nathan Boone home will be free from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Staff
will discuss recent activities and accomplishments at the historic
site, including the new information kiosk, the successful prescribed
burn operations at the site and the reconstruction of the porch of the
Boone Home. They will also discuss future plans and give an overview of
the historic site and its resources. A question-and-answer session will
follow. Visitors are invited to share comments about the historic site
and its facilities.
Nathan
Boone Homestead State Historic Site preserves the last home and grave
of Missouri frontiersman Nathan Boone. The historic site is located 1.5
miles north of Ash Grove on State Highway V. For more information about

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — The
public is invited to bring their ideas to an informational meeting on
Friday, Aug. 24, at Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park near Lesterville.
Sponsored by Missouri State Parks, the informational meeting will begin
at 5 p.m. at the park’s Black River Center.
Recent
accomplishments at the park and future plans will be highlighted during
the informational meeting. Visitors are invited to share comments on
the park’s services and operations.

Missouri State Parks hosts stargazing and history program at Battle of Lexington State Historic Site

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Visitors
to the Lexington Community Fair can add some extra fun and education to
their trip with a visit to Battle of Lexington State Historic Site.
During the fair, the site will be offering a program on the
Missouri-Kansas border war Aug. 23 and a stargazing event on Aug. 25.
Sponsored by Missouri State Parks, both events are free and open to the
public.
At
2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, historian Barbara Hughes will present a
program on the border war between Kansas and Missouri before the Civil
War. Hughes will portray William Quantrill’s mother and give her
reaction to the events of that time. The program will be held on the
north side of the site’s Anderson House. In case of rain, it will be
held in the visitor center.
On
Saturday, Aug. 25, the Kansas City Astronomical Society will present a
stargazing program on the battlefield. A slide show will be held in the
visitor center at 7:30 p.m. with telescopes set up on the battlefield
for viewing the sky between 8 and 10 p.m.

Missouri State Parks will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the first phase of the Forest Lake Trail, which was recently completed at Thousand Hills State Park in Kirksville. The ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 22 at the Forest Lake trailhead, located behind the restaurant.
