5/12/2011 MDC Fishing Reports

Attention Fishing Report Subscribers:

In most streams south of the Missouri River, black bass season will open May 28, 2011, until that date all black bass in those streams must be returned to the water unharmed immediately after being caught.  For details see Chapter 6 of the Wildlife Code.

PLEASE CHECK REGULATIONS CAREFULLY: Special regulations may apply to designated portions of water bodies; some baits and lures may not be legal for all portions.



CENTRAL REGION (573) 882-8388

    LAKES

Binder: 62 degrees, normal, clear; largemouth bass good on spinnerbaits and plastic worms; bluegill good on river worms and crickets; crappie good on minnows and jigs; channel catfish fair on nightcrawlers and stinkbaits; all other species slow.

Blind Pony Lake: 69 degrees, normal, dingy; fishing pressure is very low this year; channel catfish and sunfish fair on nightcrawlers; largemouth bass fair; all other species slow; the lake is closed to private boats, and bait held or transported in containers with water is prohibited. Lake of the Ozarks (Bagnell Tailwater): 59 degrees, normal, dingy; black bass season closed; crappie fair on minnows and crappie jigs; catfish slow, try worms, cut shad and chicken livers; white bass fair on light colored soft plastics and Rooster Tails.

Cypress Lake: high, channel catfish good on nightcrawlers and stinkbait; bluegill good on crickets and small jigs; crappie good on jigs and minnows; black bass good on jig & pig. (Report made on 5/11/2011)

Duck Creek: 74 degrees, high, clear; largemouth bass fair on spinnerbaits and minnows; bluegill fair on crickets and jigs; redear sunfish fair on crickets and jigs.

Area is open, but roads are rough due to flood waters washing in a few locations. (Report made on 5/11/2011)

Lake Girardeau: 64 degrees, normal, clear; all species slow. (Report made on 5/11/2011)

Perry County Lake: 74 degrees, normal, clear; crappie good on jigs; largemouth bass fair on spinnerbaits; channel catfish fair on nightcrawlers; all other species slow. (Report made on 5/10/2011)

Robert DeLaney Lake: high, dingy; bluegill fair on crickets, waxworms, and jigs; crappie fair on jigs and minnows; catfish fair on worms; all other species slow. (Report made on 5/10/2011)

Wappapello: high, muddy; channel catfish good on nightcrawlers; all other species slow. Wappapello Lake is experiencing historic level flooding.  Almost all of the access points around the lake are closed.  Highway T just below the emergency spillway was destroyed when the water topped the spillway.  Several other roads around the lake are also flooded, including Highway D.  Call the Wappapello Lake Recreation Hotline for updates at 573-222-8139.  RIVERS

Black River (near Annapolis): 63 degrees, high, muddy; smallmouth bass and goggle-eye slow on artificial bait.  Black bass season closed until May 28, 2011. (Report made on 5/12/2011)

Castor River (above Zalma): normal; dingy; all species fair. (Report made on 5/12/2011)

Lower Black River (Clearwater Dam): high, dingy; catfish fair on worms and live bait; black bass fair on minnows and jigs (prohibited from harvest until the fourth Saturday in May); crappie fair on minnows; all other species slow.  The US Army Corps of Engineers reopened the recreation area just below the dam late last week. Mississippi (below Charleston): falling, muddy; catfish and drum fair on worms; catfish are also being caught in the river using trotlines with cut baits and chicken gizzards; snaggers and bow fishermen are taking advantage of water conditions and are catching quite a few Asian carp, drum, common carp, and gar; all other species slow.   (Report made on 5/12/2011)

    LAKES

Bull Shoals (West): 60 degrees, high, dingy; white bass fair on soft plastics; bluegill fair on worms; all other species slow. (Report made on 5/11/2011)

Lake Taneycomo: 50 degrees, high, clear; trout good on white marabou jigs and blue/chrome or black/chrome crankbaits. (Report made on 5/11/2011)

Pomme de Terre: 68 degrees, high, water level is 9' above normal; upper portion of lake dingy with lower portion clear; crappie good on jig or minnow in 5' to 15' of water close to bank next to submerged bushes or over established fish attractors in deeper water; catfish good on limb lines in upper arms of lake on hotdogs, worms or cut shad; black bass fair on spinning baits and plastic baits over submerged cover and points; all other species fair. Stockton: 63 degrees, high, dingy; catfish good on liver and nightcrawlers; crappie good on minnows and tube jigs in 10' to 15' of water near brush piles; walleye good while jigging on bottom off of lake points; all other species slow. (Report made on 5/11/2011)

Table Rock (James River arm): 71 degrees, high, dingy; catfish good using either pole and line or trotlines, use live bait such as small sunfish and goldfish for flathead and cut bait or nightcrawlers for channel catfish; black bass fair in 5' to 10' of water on white or white/chartreuse spin baits, also try gray or white grubs on 1/2 oz. jigs, Carolina rigging plastic worms is also producing bites, try using plum, purple, motor oil or watermelon colored baits; all other species slow. TROUT PARKS

Bennett Spring State Park: 54 degrees, the spring level is about 2 inches above normal and beginning to clear; Zone 1 and 2 best lures: bead head Cracklebacks, gingersnap with 8 oz. gold head colored, pink and white colored and black and yellow colored marabou jigs, orange flake colored and black and yellow colored Rooster Tails, tri-colored and white, and white and red colored glo balls; Zone 3 best lures: fluorescent orange colored and pink Power Baits, fluorescent pink plastic worms and salmon eggs. Fishing hours for May are 6:30 a.m. to 8:15 p.m.

Maramec Spring Park: 56 degrees, falling, dingy; fishing is good; the water is slowly clearing up; there is good flow due to the recent rains and large spring output; fishing hours for the month of May are 6:30 a.m to 8:15 p.m. Kid's Free Fishing Day will be held rain or shine on Saturday, May 14th, 2011. Montauk State Park: 56 degrees, the river level is still slightly higher than normal, but slowly dropping. The water is stained. Fishing is good on most baits with bright colors, and scented baits are working the best.  The best fishing is during the morning and evening hours. May fishing hours are 6:30 a.m. to 8:15 p.m.

Roaring River State Park: 57 degrees, falling, the stream is dingy and a little above normal; the river is very fishable; water is clearing up more every day; spoons, plastic worms and power eggs are working very well; use scented baits in zones allowed. Kid's Fishing Day is May 14th. Upper holes will be reserved for kids 15 and under; holes will remain reserved all day.  (Report made on 5/12/2011)
