Conservation Commissioner Don Bedell reappointed by Gov. Nixon

Gov. Jay Nixon recently announced his reappointment of Don C. Bedell (pictured) to the Missouri Conservation Commission.
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Gov. Jay Nixon recently announced his reappointment of Don C. Bedell of Sikeston to the Missouri Conservation Commission. The Commission protects and manages Missouri’s forest, fish and wildlife resources and provides opportunities for Missourians to use, enjoy, and learn about nature.
“Don Bedell’s service on the Conservation Commission since 2009, including a term as chair, has been exemplary, cementing Missouri’s role as the nationwide leader in conservation,” said Gov. Nixon regarding his July 24 reappointment of Bedell.
Gov. Nixon added that, during the past six years, with Bedell as a member, the Missouri Conservation Commission has seen record harvests of wildlife, and increased numbers of participants in outdoor conservation-related activities, particularly among Missouri’s youth, minority, and disabled populations. The Governor praised the commission for its excellent management of Missouri’s wildlife and forestry resources, even in challenging circumstances.
Conservation Commissioner Don Bedell stated, “It is an honor to have been appointed and serve Missouri citizens these past six years. The combined work and dedication of Department staff and Missouri citizens has resulted in some great conservation achievements over the last six years. The Governor, First Lady, and my fellow Commissioners are great conservationists who continue to help Missouri be a national and world leader in conservation. I am both flattered and humbled to serve a second term on the Conservation Commission.”
Bedell, a Republican, is an accomplished businessman, avid conservationist and enthusiastic sportsman. He is a Life Sponsor of Ducks Unlimited, a Life Member of Quail Unlimited, Inc., a Sustaining Member of the Conservation Federation of Missouri, a Diamond Sponsor of the National Wild Turkey Federation, and a Life Member of Safari Club International.
He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture and a Master of Science degree in Animal Nutrition with a double minor in biochemistry and wildlife. He is owner of B&B Boats and Bikes in Sikeston and B&R Marine & Cycle in Batesville, Ark. He has founded and run numerous other businesses, primarily in healthcare/nursing home management. He serves on numerous boards of directors and is an advisory board member to the Southeast Missouri State University College of Health and Human Services.
The four members of the Conservation Commission serve six year terms and are appointed by the Governor, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate. Not more than two Commissioners from the same political party may serve at the same time. Commissioners receive no salary or other compensation. The three other Commissioners are Marilynn J. Bradford of Jefferson City who serves as Commission Chair, David W. Murphy of Columbia who serves as Vice Chair, and James T. Blair, IV, of St. Louis who serves as Secretary.
Commissioner responsibilities are statewide and include serving as the Conservation Department’s policy makers, approving Wildlife Code regulations, strategic planning, budget development and major expenditure decisions, and appointing the director of the Conservation Department.
The Governor has appointed Bedell to a term that ends July 1, 2021. The appointment is subject to confirmation by the Missouri Senate.

fishing is fair; the spring branch is back to normal flow and the water has cleared up; the weeds have been freshly cut so there are many open areas to fish; very light line is a must to be successful, 1-2lb test if you are fishing during the mid day sun; fish are hitting green and white, black, and gray marabou jigs; doughbaits in salmon peach and hatchery brown colors are producing good fish when fished on a small treble hook and suspended under a float; remember that all brown trout less than 15" in length must be returned to the water immediately; fishing hours for the month of July are 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.; for more information call 573-265-7801.

the water level is still slightly above normal at 1.76' at the lower end of the park and dropping slowly; water clarity is still dingy but improving: using 6 lb. test fishing line or lighter is recommended; fishing is still good on all baits with white, brown, and yellow scented doughbaits working well in the bait zones; single hook Rooster Tails are also a good choice in all zones; anglers continue to have some success with cream jigs, glo balls, red zebra midge, and olive leech; fish are hitting light making it hard to diagnose a strike; the best time to fish during hot weather are in the morning and evening; fishing hours for July are 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and for August are 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.; for up-to-date stream conditions checkhttp://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv?07064440.

Kids Fishing Day is August 15th; the river is in good condition and the water level has dropped about 5 inches in the last week; the water has a greenish look right now and will have for a few weeks, so the dry fly fishing will slowly come back; right now we are fishing dark wooly buggers, prince nymphs, copper johns, lightning bugs, small gold jigs, small thread jigs and brassies; large dry flies will take a few here and there; the fish are still reacting to a hopper or beetle, in some areas, where there is a bit of slow water, glo balls and the San Juan worms, in bright orange and red are also working; buggers with extra Mylar in the tails are working good, use 5x and 6x; the water is still up a bit and the use of Power Baits is recommended if you just want to catch a fast limit of trout, the orange, fluorescent yellow and white are all good in the eggs; if you are using the worms, the orange peel, orange, cheese yellow and chartreuse are all working; small gold spoons are really good if you fish them deep and slow; small spinnerbaits still work fine, you may need to add a bit of lead to get them down deep enough with the current; jigs are catching fish, 1/32 and larger are best, but a few people have been catching trout on the white and olive micro jig; larger jigs are working best, in the darker colors, olive, black, black/yellow and dark brown have all been working well; in this type of water the use of 4 lb. and 3 lb. line is recommended; as the water clears we will go back to the 2 lb. line; if you go into zone 3 nightcrawlers and minnows would be good choices, or any of the bright colored Power Baits should work.

Trout Stocking

Trout Stocking
The Conservation Department stocks trout in each of the trout parks every evening from the day before the March 1 opener through Oct. 30. Tag sale estimates determine a daily stocking rate average of 2.25 fish per expected angler. Except on opening day, three fish are stocked for every expected angler. From March 1 to Oct. 31, the parks will collectively sell more than 400,000 tags and stock more than 900,000 fish. These fish will average about 12 inches long over the season, but some variation occurs. Dozens of lunkers weighing upwards of 3 pounds are stocked each year. A few tip the scales at more than 10 pounds.
